Vitaly Churkin died the day before his 65th birthday. The Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his deep condolences to the family and friends of the diplomat.

The representative of the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, also expressed his condolences.

'I am shocked. Our thoughts are now with his family, friends and his government,' he told the reporters.

The meeting of the UN began with a minute of silence in memory of the Russian diplomat.
