European Parliament approved visa regime abolition for Ukraine and Georgia

At the Assembly session in Strasbourg, according to the results of voting, the European Parliament approved the completion of the legislative process of the abolition of visas for citizens of Ukraine and Georgia.

The decision was taken by the majority of European MPs.

In early December, the European institutions agreed a mechanism for the suspension of visa-free travel to third countries in case of an uncontrolled influx of migrants and refugees from their territory to one or more countries of the Union. It is the lack of such a mechanism that Brussels had explained the delay of the abolition of visas for citizens of Ukraine and Georgia.

Now, this directive has to be formally approved the EU Council.

Earlier, a source at the European Commission said that the EU can provide a visa-free regime for citizens of the two countries in the spring of 2017. Meanwhile, Kiev and Tbilisi expected that the abolition of visas would occur this year.
