Hague demands to exclude military and financial aid from EU - Ukraine agreement

Hague demands that the EU agreement on association with Ukraine exclude a new military and financial aid to Kiev. It was reported by Reuters with reference to a draft resolution, prepared by the Hague, of the EU summit on Ukraine scheduled for December 15-16, which will allow the Netherlands to ratify the agreement on the association.

‘The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte wants the EU leaders to say on Thursday that a new agreement of the community on closer ties with Ukraine should not include new financial obligations or security commitments,’ said the agency.

In the referendum on the ratification of the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine in the Netherlands on April 6, more than 60% of the electorate voted against ratification of the document. Although the referendum is advisory in nature, the Dutch government is now looking for ways to change the terms of the Association Agreement, which would allow to carry out its ratification in view of the referendum results. By the EU summit on December 15-16, Hague should submit their proposals.

Currently, the Association Agreement has been ratified by 27 out of the 28 EU countries and is used in the so-called pre-trial mode. Earlier, the head of the European Council, Donald Tusk said that the text of the agreement would not be revised, as this would require to start the procedure for its ratification by all the EU countries again. Therefore, the only option is the adoption of a supplementary protocol limiting the effect of the Agreement.
