Merkel: Issue of Ukraine's accession to EU is not on agenda

17:54, 03.07.2016

The issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU is currently not on the agenda. It was announced in Berlin, by German Chancellor Angela Merkel after talks with Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman.

‘I do not want to wake the wrong expectations. I think that first it is necessary to implement the agreement on Ukraine's association with the EU. The issue of its accession to the EU is not yet on the agenda but we want to support Ukraine in its approaching the EU standards,’ she said.

Merkel pointed out that the visa-free regime would be granted to Ukraine only after the adoption of the EU mechanism for its suspension.

‘We know that the theme of the liberalisation of the visa regime plays an important role for Ukraine. Ukraine has fulfilled all conditions and we, of course, talked about it,’ she said.

Merkel did not rule out holding a meeting of the leaders of the "Norman Quartet” in the near future.

‘The time for the meeting in the "Norman format" has not come yet. I do not rule out that the it will come to it in the foreseeable future. But when the "foreseeable future” will come, I can not say, she noted.

Merkel also said that the government should hold elections in Donbass after a stable truce established in the region, adding that ‘now the elections can not be held due to objective reasons as now it is not simply safe in Donbass’.
