In Balakleya, in the Kharkov region, the radiation background has significantly increased. This is reported by the «Russian Spring», the «Tsargrad» and the «Channel 5», referring to their sources. 

According to the publications, the permissible norms have already been exceeded many times, despite the fact that there are no nuclear weapons in Ukraine. 

‘There are no nuclear weapons in Balakleya, of course, like throughout Ukraine. Therefore, rumors of a secret stockpile of nuclear weapons, even of tactical level, this is nonsense. However, there are shells with cores from depleted uranium. In the case of explosions, like those going on now, this depleted uranium can «soil» the ground, air and raise the background,’ said one of the AFU ex-officers.

As it is known, earlier on the Balakleya official website, the authorities posted a message about the presence in the region of ‘several objects that create radiation risks’. At the same time, the Ukrainian officials ask not to aggravate the situation, saying that such reports are provocation. 

In Balakleya, for 4 days the fire has been raging at the military base, where 138,000 ammunition was stored. The Defense Ministry of Ukraine reported that the fires had been completely eliminated, but the rescuers say the opposite. 

‘As of 21:00 on March 25, single explosions of ammunition of various intensity are observed on the technical territory of the arsenal in the town of Balakleya, the Kharkov region,’ the press service of the State Emergency Situations Ministry said.

At the same time, according to the official information, over 40 houses in Balakleya need major repairs, about 100 houses and social infrastructure facilities have suffered an average degree of destruction. However, local residents claim that the number of destroyed objects are many times larger. 

It should also be noted the arrival of NATO military who, yesterday, on March 25, landed in Kharkov on the permission of the President of Ukraine Poroshenko, with the purpose of providing assistance for the de-mining of warehouses in the military unit near Balakleya.
