Ukraine erected a new dam to block water supply to Crimea

01:29, 01.05.2017

The Kherson region administration has put into operation a new capital dam which is designed to block the flow of the Dneper water along the North Crimean canal to the Crimea.

A dam worth 35 million UAH (about $ 1.3 million) was built for the year. Representatives of the local administration explained that the reason for the construction of this facility had been the need to restore the water supply to agricultural areas in the south of the Kherson region, which three years ago after the closure of the sluices upstream were cut off from it along with the peninsula.

According to the chief engineer of the North Crimean Canal Administration, Vladimir Ohapko, after the construction of the dam, the relevant services are engaged in the creation of infrastructure. The new dam, according to Ohapko, has a sluice that can be opened to fill with water ‘another 300 kilometers of the North-Crimean canal (up to reservoirs on the peninsula - TASS comment)’.
