The Pentagon has dispelled the myth of Ukraine's accession to NATO. In fact, contrary to the statements of the Ukrainian officials, the country has not yet made the right choice. It was stated on the Voice of America by Michael Carpenter, the US Deputy Assistant of the Secretary of Defense for Ukraine, Russia and CIS.

According to him, the Ukrainian government should ‘still work on the civil consciousness’ before stating to join the Alliance.

‘To date, the Ukrainian side has not yet taken a clear position on NATO. We respect it. The Alliance must attract new partners, but only those who have accepted the appropriate conditions. According to these conditions, these are countries that share the values of the Member States and have carried out appropriate reforms. It is too early to speak about Ukraine's membership in NATO. We see that the position of the society is changing, but, in our opinion, there is still need for some work in this direction. And it is on the shoulders of the Ukrainian government,’ said Carpenter.
