US purchases Soviet weapons for Syrian rebels from Ukraine

Source The Pentagon bought weapons for the Syrian rebels from Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Georgia. This is stated in the investigation of the Center for the Study of Corruption and Organized Crime (OCCRP) and the Balkan Association of Investigative Journalists (BIRN).  ‘The Pentagon hired an entire army of contractors and subcontractors, from rich military industrial corporations to firms linked to the organized crime. They were used to send to the Syrian rebels, who had long been at war with the Islamic state (prohibited in the Russian Federation), the Soviet model weapons and ammunition worth $ 2.2 billion’, alleges the investigation. As the journalists found out, the Balkan and East European arms manufacturers, who are already working at full capacity to supply the Syrian war, are not able to meet this demand. Therefore, the US Department of Defense turned to other suppliers from Kazakhstan, Georgia and Ukraine, while reducing the requirements for production standards.  The...

For the U.S., Arming Ukraine Could Be a Deadly Mistake

Source By Michael Kofman On his visit to Ukraine this week, the American defense secretary, Jim Mattis, confirmed that he favors providing “defensive weapons” to the former Soviet republic. According to recent reports, this military aid would involve sending Javelin anti-tank guided missiles to Ukraine, which has been fighting Russian-backed separatists in the eastern Donbass region for more than three years. The Trump administration’s plan to arm Kiev is a serious political decision that could have far-reaching strategic consequences. The United States is walking into a proxy war with Moscow — one that it is unprepared to win. Notionally, helping Ukraine is admirable, but the lack of public discussion and suddenness of this announcement are worrisome. While arming Kiev may seem like an easy political win, it is poor policy. The idea of providing Ukraine with $50 million-worth of anti-tank missiles is eerily reminiscent of Washington’s halfhearted efforts to train...

Ukraine is One Step from a New Chernobyl

Source CyberBerkut adherents from Kiev gave us a trove of national company Energoatom documents revealing the Ukrainian nuclear power plants' operation. The desperate state of the Ukraine nuclear power industry is not a myth. Experts forecast an increase in nuclear accidents due to keeping old reactors operating. The lifetime of numerous nuclear power units operating since the Soviet came to an end. But Ukraine has no money for constructing the new ones. That's why the Ukrainian authorities adopted the plan to extend the technical lifetime of nuclear units over another ten years. The plan, however, turned out to be ineffective, crude and harmful to the environment. It also poses a threat...

Kremlin’s nightmare in Khreshchatyk

Source By Yulia Vityazeva The Russians have long since understood everything. For example, the fact that «strong and independent» Ukraine has, in fact, turned out to be a common kept woman who has replaced one «sponsor» with another. However, the replacement has not turned out very successful.  The reason for this, if nothing else, is that Russia which, according to legends, offended, infringed, oppressed, festered and dreamed of enslaving Ukraine, behaved somewhat strange for the «aggressor». It gave money and cooperated (sometimes, to its own detriment) without demanding in exchange to lift a moratorium on the sale of agricultural land, raise the retirement age, cut down forests...
