Charges of terrible tortures of "separatists" by SBU confirmed

The human rights activist Arkady Bushchenko said in an interview with the TV channel 112 that Ukraine could lose international support due to the possible tortures of prisoners detained on suspicion of separatism.

The Politnavigator reported yesterday that, for the second time in its history, the UN mission, which verifies countries on the matter of tortures of prisoners, demonstratively left Ukraine, accusing the authorities of countering their activities. The problem was about possible tortures of prisoners accused of separatism.

According to Yuri Tandit, an adviser of the head of the SBU, the mission was not allowed in some prisons containing prisoners of the SBU, for 'legitimate reasons'. It was arranged by the SBU, despite the fact that the country had signed the Convention on combating torture, according to which it is obliged to allow UN representatives to any place of detention.

The Ukrainian human rights activist Arkady Buschenko sharply commented on the incident.

'We presented ourselves as a very indecent country, you can say it for sure. For the first time Ukraine behaved with an international body so rudely, bringing it to the point that they demonstratively left the country, saying that there was no point in continuing the visit. There were not created any conditions for their normal operation, which should have been done under the Convention,' said Buschenko.

'When the delegation says it wants to check the room, the door should open. When, under different pretexts, it does not, it means that Ukraine confirms the suspicions which caused these visits, suspicions that, under control of the SBU, there are a lot of people who are tortured, that there is a bunch of crippled people, that the horrors occur there,' says Arkady Buschenko.

According to him, to return the UN mission to Ukraine, it is necessary to open the doors of all the places where people are detained, or 'it can strongly affect the international support that we need so much at this time,' said Buschenko.
