EU: West will not go to another Crimean War for the sake of Ukraine

The solution to the conflict in Ukraine is not in a military conflict with Russia, but in the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, and the prolongation of the sanctions will not change it, believes a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of France, Pierre Lellouche.

‘We do not recognize the annexation of the Crimea, but neither Washington nor Paris or London would go to another Crimean War of 1853. 150 years ago we lost there 100 thousand people. No one will do it again,’ he said.

According to the French politician, the best recipe in such a situation is to work on increasing the economic and political power of Ukraine.

‘As for Donbass, we have the Minsk process. We have to implement it. A part of the responsibility here lies with Russia, but the other part lies with Ukraine. So, the French and the Germans should provide a calendar, according to which both Russia and Ukraine will carry out their obligations. Ukraine should adopt several laws. That is what should be done. I do not believe that the renewal of the sanctions every six months will bring us closer to this goal,’ he said at the 13th Annual Meeting of YES «The world, Europe and Ukraine: the storms of change» in Kiev.
