Voting for visa-free regime with Ukraine postponed again

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament will vote on granting Ukraine a visa-free regime in late September or mid-October.

It is reported by DW with reference to the Committee Secretariat.

On September 5, the Committee considered the introduction of a visa-free regime with Georgia, Kosovo and Ukraine. While the relevant reports on Georgia and Kosovo were submitted to the vote of the members, the report of the Bulgarian MEP Maria Gabriel (European People's Party), with a proposal to add Ukraine to the list of countries with which the EU introduces a visa-free regime, was only to be heard.

In her report, Gabriel recommended the European Parliament to cancel the visa regime with Ukraine, and encouraged the members of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs to support her draft report.

In particular, the document noted that, since 2014, Ukraine had made ‘significant and rapid progress’ in the implementation of the Action Plan on the liberalization of the visa regime with the EU, ’in spite of the internal and external challenges the country is facing’.

Earlier, it was reported that the European Parliament would consider the report on a visa-free regime for Ukraine on 5 September 2016.
