No region of Ukraine but Galicia greeted the Nazis with such pleasure

It is necessary to separate the Ukrainian and Galician collaboration that took place during the Second World War.

It was stated by Vladimir Kornilov, a historian and political scientist, in an interview with "Moskovsky Komsomolets».

‘In no region of the Soviet Union, occupied by the Germans, the Nazis were greeted so noisily, so happily and so magnificently as in Galicia. It is an indisputable fact! I have often heard cries of the offended Galicians saying that collaborators were everywhere. Yes, of course, they were. But you will not find in the other regions any photos of such massive ceremonies of greeting the Nazis which were held in the towns and villages of Western Ukraine. Neither in Poltava, nor in Mirgorod, nor in Kiev, much less so in Donbass, were the Germans greeted in such a way. And, by the way, in those regions the local population did not commit such violent anti-Jewish pogroms, as did the Ukrainians in Lvov and several other localities of Galicia in June and July 1941,’ said the expert.

‘Therefore, we must separate the Ukrainian and Galician collaboration, as by their scope, value, ideological sense they were not quite identical phenomena. In addition, we must not forget that, due to a shortage of personnel in the east, the Germans often brought there collaborators from Galicia,’ summed Kornilov.
