The Russian border guards detained at the border with the Rostov region a Ukrainian soldier who had deserted in order not to fight against the citizens of the DPR and LPR. It was reported by a source in the law enforcement structures of the region.

‘The other day at the border, there was detained a private of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Evgeny Sergienko. During the interrogation, he said that had not been trying to hide, but had intentionally walked to bypass the checkpoint, in order to surrender to the Russian border guards. He explained that he did not want to serve in the Ukrainian army and had escaped because he was not ready to fight against his own people from the DPR and LPR. He also announced that he was going to ask for the political asylum in Russia,’ said the statement of the Border Guard Service.

According to Sergienko, he did not want to ‘shoot at his people’, did not want to fight, and knew that he would flee at the first opportunity.

‘The military unit in Bashkirovka where I had served, there was massive drinking and carelessness. I quietly got up, went through places which nobody controlled and which were not even guarded,’ he said.

He noted that having reaching the border by detours, he had voluntarily surrendered to the Russian border guards. At this point, Sergienko is being checked.
